‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?
Light therapy is clearly enjoying a moment. You can now buy glowing gadgets designed to address complexion problems and aging signs along with sore muscles and oral inflammation, the latest being an oral care tool enhanced with tiny red LEDs, marketed by the company as “a breakthrough for domestic dental hygiene.” Worldwide, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. As claimed by enthusiasts, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, enhancing collagen production, easing muscle tension, reducing swelling and chronic health conditions as well as supporting brain health.
Research and Reservations
“It appears somewhat mystical,” notes a neuroscience expert, a scientist who has studied phototherapy extensively. Of course, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, additionally, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Daylight-simulating devices frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to combat seasonal emotional slumps. So there’s no doubt we need light energy to function well.
Types of Light Therapy
Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. Potential UVB consequences, such as burning or tanning, are recognized but medical equipment uses controlled narrow-band delivery – signifying focused frequency bands – which minimises the risks. “It’s supervised by a healthcare professional, so the dosage is monitored,” explains the dermatologist. Essentially, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to ensure that the wavelength that’s being delivered is fit for purpose – different from beauty salons, where it’s a bit unregulated, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”
Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps
Red and blue LEDs, he says, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, though they might benefit some issues.” Red light devices, some suggest, improve circulatory function, oxygen absorption and skin cell regeneration, and stimulate collagen production – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Research exists,” comments the expert. “However, it’s limited.” Nevertheless, given the plethora of available tools, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. We don’t know the duration, proper positioning requirements, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. Numerous concerns persist.”
Treatment Areas and Specialist Views
Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – despite the fact that, notes the dermatologist, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he says, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. If it’s not medically certified, standards are somewhat unclear.”
Cutting-Edge Studies and Biological Processes
At the same time, in advanced research areas, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, discovering multiple mechanisms for infrared’s cellular benefits. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he reports. Multiple claimed advantages have created skepticism toward light treatment – that results appear unrealistic. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.
Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, however two decades past, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He designed tools for biological testing,” he explains. “I was quite suspicious. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, which most thought had no biological effect.”
Its beneficial characteristic, though, was its efficient water penetration, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.
Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits
Additional research indicated infrared affected cellular mitochondria. These organelles generate cellular energy, creating power for cellular operations. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, including the brain,” explains the neuroscientist, who, as a neuroscientist, decided to focus the research on brain cells. “Studies demonstrate enhanced cerebral circulation with light treatment, which is always very good.”
Using 1070nm wavelength, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. At controlled levels these compounds, explains the expert, “activates protective proteins that safeguard mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”
