Caelan Doris Included in Irish Selection While Joe McCarthy Omitted
Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has named captain Doris in his Irish squad for the fall internationals, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.
Lock McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.
Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash also miss out because of injury, while number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery following the summer tour.
Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped member in the 34-man group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Bolton will head to Chicago as "backup".
Following facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous encounter, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again vie for the starting fly-half position. The fly-half role is remains available, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 selected as Farrell deciding not to selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced cohort of centre options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at number 15.
Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.
Paddy McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has started two of his province's three league games this season and played in the second string's defeat by the English in Bristol previously.
The 22-year-old was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, but did not earn a international appearance.
Munster lock Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, and veteran Ulster lock Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.
Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests during the tour, is set to deputise for Doris should the skipper does not regain full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.
The national team will meet in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on the following day.
