Background Context
The former director was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was fired about four months into the former president's initial presidency as national leader. At the time, Mr Comey was overseeing an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between the Russian government and the election effort.
During his tenure, James Comey triggered a counter-response from liberal politicians when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was examining Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a private email server. Legal actions against Clinton were not filed, leading to negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Government attorneys assert the former director gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They say he deceived the legislative body by stating he had not authorized a person at the agency to disclose to journalistic entities details about the FBI investigations.
Legal representatives also accuse the defendant of "wrongfully trying to affect, obstruct and delay" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."
These allegations against James Comey surfaced after the former president posted on digital channels demanding his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, take legal action against the former director and additional individuals.
