Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australian One-Day International Lineup to Face India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-match ODI series facing India, as high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a shock selection.
Performance Issues Lead to Omission
The right-hander was left out from the ODI team after scoring just one run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a best innings of 47 in his last 10 ODI innings.
The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates
Labuschagne has shown signs of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
The left-hander may to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a return to the Test team as Australia seek a solution to their opening batting issues.
Pace Returns and Fitness News
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after being rested since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Team Announcement Approach and Fixtures
Australia have named a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to seal a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”
