A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Love Story
Throughout this cartoon adventure aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to collecting teeth from sleeping youngsters and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold in exchange. But Van’s curiosity grows when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the ugly gnome he expected.
A Forbidden Bond and Common Enemy
Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of teen romance (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The fairy and goblin communities are estranged from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet both maintain biased views about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered sorts, prone to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are reportedly dim-witted, smelly, and backward, but are actually bright and technologically advanced.
Of course, such a setup requires a shared foe to unite against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as quite savage, though not particularly skilled, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts
There aren’t all that many animated films aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience first crushes, but are not mature enough for the content teenagers are watching in lieu of Twilight. If your child falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.
The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
